Sam Lowes took his first win of the 2016 season at the Jerez Circuit with a 2.4 second gap to second place Jonas Folger.

Lowes led for most of the race, and the win puts him top of the championship standings.

Johann Zarco managed to pass Thomas Luthi to finish in fifth place, after Lorenzo Baldassarri dropped back leaving Zarco able to grab the extra championship points.

Briton Lowes started from pole but dropped to second on the first lap as Jonas Folger managed to jump to the front from the middle of the grid.

The track is known to become slippery when the track temperature reaches 30°, and Dunlop had measured temperatures of 31°.

A big crash on the first lap saw Ratthapark Wilairot and Xavi Vierge end their race. Then Alex Marquez dumped his Estrella Galicia bike on the second lap.

Simone Corsi, celebrating his 29th birthday, lost it on turn two on the very next lap.

Lowes got back in front after Folger went wide at turn six, with Lowes then getting his head down to try to pull away from him.

Lowes found his rhythm while Folger spent the race on his tail and having to use a lot of the curb to keep up with Lowes and his consistent lap times.

Danny Kent crashed at turn six, after a similar crash in warm up this morning, forcing him into an early retirement.

Luca Marini, Valentino Rossi’s half brother, race was disrupted after crashing with 22 laps left, but the Italian rider kept circulating, managing to finish 16th.

Marcel Schrotter crashed twice during the race, the second of which left him out for the remainder of it.

Miguel Oliveira managed to walk away from a 100mph crash although his bike was completely destroyed.
