The WRC has announced plans to extend its coverage of the WRC 2 Category with immediate effect through its WRC TV production company.

The extended coverage will be beneficial to fans and teams alike in the ultra-competitive series which supports the World Rally Championship at every round.

WRC Promoter managing director Oliver Ciesla said: “Rising entries and increasing fan interest in WRC 2 reflect the popularity and importance of the WRC’s support championships for drivers, teams and their commercial partners.

“The increased appeal is further indication of the positive development of our sport. As the European gravel rallies approach, where entries are traditionally at their strongest, we’ve been encouraged to offer fans more opportunity to enjoy the excitement of WRC 2.

“A bigger focus on WRC 2 across our outlets will generate increased global exposure, particularly in countries in which their leading rally stars are pursuing success in that category.”

The new standalone highlights package will be made available to broadcasters from the finish of the Rally Argentina (April 21 – 24, 2016).

Additional highlights of the category will also be made available to view on the WRC’s YouTube channel and other interactive platforms, including www.wrc.com and also includes increased coverage on social media.

Additionally, the series will see enhanced coverage on the www.wrcplus.com, including a dedicated section boasting highlights of each round, to add to the new live GPS tracking, which came in at the last round in Rally Mexico to compliment to already existing live timing, live text and live radio.

The WRC 2 category is regarded as the final feeder category for drivers aiming for the coveted WRC drives with the larger factory teams in the series. Since its inception in 2010, the series has seen a number of successful events over it tenure and currently uses the FIA R5 rules – taking over from the previous super 2000, N4 and N5 rules.

In the category’s short history, it has produced some epic battles and been home to many up and coming and big name drivers, including former F1 star, and 2013 champion, Robert Kubica; 2 time Dakar Champion and 2 time WRC 2 series champion Nasser Al-Attiyah; and up and coming Citroen star, Stéphane Lefebvre.

The series is currently led by ex M-Sport refugee, Elfin Evans, who leads a crop of exciting young talents, all gunning for title.
