Former world champion Fernando Alonso has admitted that there is still a possibility of him missing the Chinese Grand Prix which is taking place this weekend.
The Spaniard was hurt during a spectacular crash during the opening race of the season in Australia. He suffered fractured ribs in the incident, and was told by medical staff that he could not take part in Bahrain.
During the McLaren team's preview press conference for the upcoming race in Shanghai, Alonso maintained he was hopeful of being behind the wheel for the full weekend schedule, but stressed that until he was cleared by the medical team he was not making assumptions, but was "continuing to prepare for the race weekend as normal".
He said: "It was disappointing to be told I couldn’t race in Bahrain, but I fully respected the decision of the FIA medical team".
The two-time winner in China will undergo further medical examinations on Thursday before a final decision is made.
McLaren's talented reserve driver, Stoffel Vandoorne, is on stand-by to replace Alonso for a second time, should the all-clear not be given.
The young Belgian impressed in his first drive for the team in Bahrain, completing the race and gaining McLaren their first point of the season with a brilliant 10th placed finish.
